Remember, if you're having a hard time, try repositioning your hand so it is up off the dulcimer, like if you were playing piano. Keep an eye on your position and angle the dulcimer out so the 1st or second fret is over your left knee.
Here are a couple videos of concerts given by a couple friends of mine, Sarah Morgan and Aaron O'Rourke. Sarah uses her thumbs quite a bit and plays with 4 strings like whats on your dulcimer.
