About Katie Moritz

2013 National Hammered Dulcimer Champion, Katie Moritz a hammered dulcimer player and teacher whose style of playing ranges from american old-time, to modern pop.  She began playing the instrument in 2006. Her studies of the instrument have led her to travel and learn from other many dulcimer players.  She's combined her scholarly studies of music with her informal training to develop a style of dulcimer playing uniquely her own.

Katie's recognitions include six consecutive master/apprentice grants from the Illinois Arts Council for her traditional dulcimer playing. She has won both the southern and mid-eastern regional hammered dulcimer championships and in 2013 she was honored to win the national championship on her instrument.

Currently, Katie teaches private students in Yorkville, IL  and group workshops at festivals and gatherings around the country.  Her dulcimer playing can be heard on a Duet CD called Kaleidoscope, which is available for sale on this website.

The Instrument

The Hammered Dulcimer is an ancient stringed percussion instrument consisting of wire strings that are stretched tightly across a wooden soundboard.  The strings are then struck by small mallets called "hammers". It's origins date back over 2000 years and seem to have originated in Persia, where it then spread in all directions. This resulted in different variations of this instrument that can be found today worldwide. A modern instrument that is a direct descendent of the hammered dulcimer is the piano.
